Randy and I have cooped up at home since Christmas due to the deep freeze and the deepening snow. We did however get out on Jan 3 for the Trimble Christmas bird count. This is the 3rd year for us and the 2nd for our territory east of Smithville Lake. We suited up in thermals and coveralls and snow boots and braved the single-digits in a foot of snow with more coming down for the first half of the day. Despite the conditions and the resultant sparcity of birds, I had fun hiking through the snow. It was not the typicaly slushy, mushy snow of MO but powder, soft and sparkly and dry!
We did flush a long-eared owl out of a grove of pines and we watched 8 short-eared owls.
