Campout with Eric @ WCR

This weekend, my nephew Eric and I headed down to WCR. We had planned to camp and just enjoy the outdoors. The weather over the past few days has been unseasonably cold with highs in the 50s. I was OK with it as I could stand to wear enough clothing to keep the bugs off and the cold seemed to keep the gnats away. When we arrived, we did some hiking over the trails, I got a couple new birds for the place, American Redstart and Yellow Billed Cuckoo. After the walk we got back I mowed the campground and the trails on the near side of Bear's Creek and set up our camp, I love my new Springbar (made in the USA) screen tent, it is very heavy duty and works great. We then got the canoe out and went about 1 mile upstream. We fished some of the deeper holes, Eric caught a few sunfish while I got skunked.

After getting back we set up the rifle range on the rail road bed. Eric and I took turns shooting at the targets, I let Eric shoot my target rifles and he ended up hitting the 75 Meter targets.
After shooting we built a good fire to get some coals ready for the burgers we brought down. We had some really good burgers and then planned our next adventure, we decided on fishing the pool near camp on Walnut Creek. We ended up catching Common Carp, Drum, Striped Bass & Channel Catfish, as Eric is quick to point out, he outfished me 3 to 1. (I think I got him on weight).

We then played around the fire for sometime, then headed down for some latenight catfishing, unfortuneatly we didn't catch a thing though we had some nibbles. We got tired so we headed back to camp. Eric is quite the firebug, so we got the fire going again and chilled til about 11 then headed to the tent for some low 40s camping.

We got up in the morning, the sky was crystal clear but unfortuneatly it clouded up later. I cooked some eggs and bacon on my old school Coleman Camp stove then we headed down to the creek to do some early morning fishing. I caught zip (had a few bites and one good one on though) Eric ended up catching several fish including a big Drum.

After fishing we hiked the trails. We got back and I decided to mow the remainder of my trails that I hadn't done. Eric tagged along in the cart as I mowed. He seemed to enjoy the ride.

I packed up camp as Eric played with the fire. We had to call it a day and headed back home under the cloudy skies. Hopefully we will be back in 2 weeks for a great family campout.
